BANKING & TAX

Opening a Singapore corporate bank account

Last updated: July 2026

Short answer

You can apply for a corporate account once the company is registered with ACRA — there is no mandatory waiting period. But foreign-owned companies face notably stricter KYC: banks examine shareholder background, operating substance and source of funds. Complete documents and a clear business description are key to approval. Traditional banks (DBS/OCBC/UOB) carry more weight but review slowly; digital banks (Aspire/Wise) are faster but more limited.

Process and timelines

Bank typeStructureRough timeline
Local DBS/OCBC/UOBSimple, directors in Singapore~2-4 weeks
Local banksForeign-owned, layered structure~6-12 weeks, multiple rounds
Local banksHigher-risk sectors (digital assets, precious metals)3-6 months, not guaranteed
Digital Aspire/Wise etc.Simple trading/e-commerce~1-2 weeks, lower limits

Documents needed

Prepare these first — missing documents are the most common cause of delay or rejection: ACRA Certificate of Incorporation and Business Profile; passport and residential address proof for all directors, shareholders and ultimate beneficial owners; a board resolution authorising the account and appointing signatories; and a business overview (operations, target markets, suppliers, expected transaction volume).

Note: since 2025, MAS explicitly requires banks to assess "source of wealth" — the background and legitimacy of founders' accumulated assets, especially for foreign-owned or newly incorporated companies with no operating history. MAS's digital framework also lets banks pull company and director data directly from ACRA and MyInfo Business, which means any inconsistency between what you filed with ACRA and what you give the bank triggers an immediate red-flag review.

Traditional vs digital banks

Traditional banks (DBS/OCBC/UOB): authoritative, full-featured, widely accepted by partners, but stricter and slower for foreign-owned companies, often requiring a video or in-person meeting.

Digital banks (Aspire, Wise, Airwallex): fast, fully online, suited to simple trading and e-commerce, but with lower transaction limits and some feature constraints. A common strategy is to use a digital bank as a bridge while building local substance, then apply to a traditional bank.

Improving your odds

Be specific about the business. Vague terms like "general trading" or "consulting" raise flags. Explain exactly what the company does, who its customers are, and how funds flow.

The interview is a trust moment. Many banks require a video or in-person meeting before formal review. Applicants who explain the model, customers and source of funds clearly — without a script — are approved more often.

Local substance lowers scrutiny. A locally resident director (citizen or PR) markedly reduces scrutiny of foreign-controlled companies and speeds things up.

Apply to several at once. Applying to multiple banks simultaneously is permitted and reasonable. But do not reapply repeatedly to the same bank in a short period — it reads as a negative signal.

Common misconceptions

"There's a waiting period after registration"

None. You can apply once registered. Speed depends on structure and documents.

"Any business description will do"

Vague descriptions are the top rejection cause. Be specific about what, who and how funds flow.

"One rejection ends it"

A rejection from one bank does not affect others. But don't immediately reapply to the same one.

How we handle it

We match the right bank to your structure, prepare KYC documents, sharpen the business description, and flag interview points. For complex structures we suggest a digital-bank bridge. See company registration; rejection causes in common reasons accounts are declined.

Frequently asked

How soon after registration can I open an account?

No mandatory wait — apply once registered. Local banks with simple structures ~2-4 weeks; foreign layered structures 6-12 weeks; digital banks ~1-2 weeks.

Must foreign directors fly to Singapore?

Depends on the bank. Many require a video or in-person meeting; some digital banks are fully online. A local director lowers scrutiny.

What documents are needed?

ACRA incorporation certificate and business profile; passport and address proof for all directors, shareholders and beneficial owners; a board resolution; a business overview.

What if one bank rejects me?

It does not affect other banks. Don't immediately reapply to the same one (it strengthens the negative file); consider a digital-bank bridge.
